Musk arrived in Indonesia

Elon Musk arrived in Indonesia Sunday to launch SpaceX’s Starlink internet services as the world’s largest archipelago seeks to boost connectivity to its most remote areas.

Musk touched down in Bali on Sunday and will inaugurate Starlink at a community health center together with Indonesian President Joko Widodo later in the afternoon, Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Panjaitan said in a statement.

Indonesia expects Starlink, which delivers broadband internet from SpaceX’s satellites, to help connect the nation’s far-flung provinces, and improve education and health services there. Starlink received a license to operate in the country earlier this month.

Jokowi, as the president is more popularly known, has long been courting Musk to cap off his decade-long bid to make Indonesia a destination of choice for foreign investors.

Indonesia is still in discussions with Tesla Inc. to invest in the nation’s burgeoning battery industry despite the downturn in the electric-vehicle market, Jokowi said in September. Starlink is also set to test its internet services in Indonesia’s planned new capital city Nusantara, which Jokowi aims to inaugurate by August.
