Elon Musk’s net worth soars – and he’s about to reach a huge milestone

Elon Musk

We are talking some serious, serious money here – but could Elon Musk eventually become the richest man in the world? His net worth is on the right path..

It was less than two weeks ago that we reported on Elon Musk and his epic increase in personal wealth. In the days that have followed, his net worth has expanded even further – by almost $30 billion in 13 days – to put him in the highest of all echelons. And things are only likely to get better for the entrepreneur…

WHAT IS ELON MUSK’S NET WORTH?

You’ll need to take a deep breath here: Elon Musk is now worth an extraordinary $96.8 billion (or R1.6 trillion) according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He’s set to become only the fourth person in history to surpass the $100 billion mark, joining Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg in that exclusive club.

In fact, the Pretoria-born Musk is also likely to push himself into the top three – overtaking Zuckerberg in the process – before the end of the month. His fortune continues to soar, and only Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos has made more money than the tech whizz has over the past 12 months.

In August 2019, Elon Musk sat on reserves of $27 billion. He’s now worth three-and-a-half times more than that, following a spike of $69.2 billion in the last year. ‘Meteoric’ doesn’t even cover it.

WHO ARE THE RICHEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD?

Jeff Bezos is sitting clear as the world’s richest man, and this is likely to remain the case for years to come. In fact, the businessman is on course to become the first trillionaire in history. Bill Gates, an absolute stalwart of these discussions, occupies second place. Meanwhile, Zuckerberg follows with $101 billion in the bank.

This latest increase for Elon Musk takes him past Warren Buffet, Larry Page and the Kock Brothers – all established titans in the financial markets. His ventures with SpaceX and Tesla have seen business boom in the middle of the pandemic, as the elite continue to be shielded from the effects of coronavirus.

South Africa has a total of five dollar-billionaires, but our richest citizen – Nicky Oppenheimer – ranks 311th in the world for net worth. Johann Rupert and Natie Kirsch aren’t far behind, either…
