Elon Musk says the secret

  • Elon Musk has revealed the secret behind Grok AI’s sassy personality.
  • The xAI founder said Grok is modeled after The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, an iconic science fiction series

Like the sassy responses given by Elon Musk’s Grok AI? Now, the xAI founder has revealed the secret behind this, and it’s not really surprising to anyone who has followed Musk for a while now.

What Happened: Musk has revealed that Grok AI’s sassy personality is modeled after The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. However, there is a twist.

“Grok’s personality is modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with a heart of gold,” Musk said in a post.

Earlier during the announcement, xAI revealed that the large-language model is laced with wit and a bit of humor. This is visible in the responses that Grok has been giving out, based on posts by some early adopters who have access to the AI chatbot and Musk himself.

Musk and other people with early access have also indulged in some “vulgar” humor – some of it can be unsafe for work, so proceed with caution. Regardless, some of these responses are funny, and Grok can also do self-deprecating humor.

On a more serious note, Grok has access to the internet and can provide the latest information as well – one example cites the coverage of US election results in Kentucky, Mississippi, and Virginia.

The official Grok account on X has also been reposting some funny responses.

Why It Matters: Grok is the first AI chatbot that xAI has come out with, while Musk has been calling for AI regulations. Giving it access to the internet aligns with Musk’s ambition to make “Groking” synonymous with Googling.

Grok also has real-time access to X’s data, so it can dig into posts on X if users want real-time information. If this sounds familiar, that is because many users tend to append site names like “twitter” and “reddit” to their Google searches, instructing Google to surface the relevant results from Twitter (now X) and Reddit.

Grok’s sassy personality might just help set it apart from the more serious and slightly boring ones like the Microsoft Corp.-backed MSFT OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s own Bing AI, and Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL Google Bard. Whether that will be enough to make Grok popular enough is something that remains to be seen.
