Elon Musk has been vocal about regulating AI, but he is now singing a different tune after President Biden‘s sweeping AI regulations mandate AI companies to “address algorithmic discrimination” and advance equity in the industry.

What Happened: Musk expressed dismay at the executive order issued by President Biden calling for regulations and safety in AI. Musk flip-flopped after someone pointed out to Musk that the executive order talks about progressive philosophies like “addressing algorithmic discrimination” and advancing equity.

Musk was responding to a post by Christopher Rufo, senior fellow at Manhattan Institute.

This flip-flop was triggered by policies that Musk has often called “woke”.

Musk, along with other tech leaders, has repeatedly called for AI regulation.

“There is a real danger for digital superintelligence having negative consequences. I am in favor of AI regulation,” Musk said at the Paris VivaTech event in June this year.

Later in Sept., he called for a “referee” for AI in a meeting of tech leaders in Washington to discuss AI regulations.

He was joined by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta Platforms Inc.’s META Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft Corp.’s MSFT former and current CEOs Bill Gates and Satya Nadella, and Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL Sundar Pichai, among others.

Now that Musk got what he asked for with President Biden’s executive order listing out an exhaustive set of AI regulations, the Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO is singing a different tune.

Beyond the progressive policies, Musk has also voiced his discontent with the technical regulations that the order imposes on AI companies.

Why It Matters: Musk has long been openly opposed to the concepts of equity, often posting disparaging remarks about the “woke” ideologies.

For instance, Musk recently posted this: “The great wakening from woke has happened. This is good for civilization.”

He has also been critical of several of the Biden administration’s policies, especially regarding border control and immigration, among other things.
