Jay Leno Cruises in the Tesla Cybertruck with Elon Musk
Elon Musk rides shotgun while Jay Leno drives Tesla’s latest, and the conversation is about as weird as you’d expect.
While the Tesla Cybertruck is still some time from hitting your local Tesla showroom, Jay Leno recently took the prototype out for a spin with Tesla boss Elon Musk riding along in the passenger seat. Before Leno hops behind the wheel of Tesla’s pickup, Leno talks with Musk and Tesla senior design executive Franz von Holzhausen about the polarizing shape of the Cybertruck and some of the truck’s features: namely, the truck’s bed and vault bed covering system.
During the drive, Musk talks about how the production variant of the Cybertruck will differ from this show car. Musk tells Leno, “We don’t do show cars that aren’t real.” Then he explains that the Cybertruck will shrink by roughly 5% in every dimension to help it better fit into garages.
Leno also drives the Cybertruck through Musk’s Boring Co. tunnel. Not surprisingly, the Cybertruck fits with room to spare on the sides. Musk comments that in a production vehicle, you should just be able to use Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance system and run hands-free through the tunnel. Musk also dives into the possible future of the Boring Co.’s underground tunnel system.
While we don’t get much feedback from Leno after his drive of the Cybertruck, he does mention that it feels like other Tesla models. According to Leno, acceleration is predictable for an electric vehicle, and the Cybertruck offers nearly instant torque from its electric driveline.
We’ll know more about how the Tesla Cybertruck drives when we get our turn in a production version when that time comes. Until then, enjoy Leno taking Tesla’s latest out for a spin.
