How Elon Musk Is Trying to Keep Cybertruck Relevant
Even though there are more pressing issues right now, the Tesla founder is floating some new details.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk may not have a Cybertruck to sell until next year, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t willing to talk about it.
Each day, Musk’s Twitter followers ask him questions about Tesla, SpaceX, and other things he might be working on. Sometimes, he answers. In most cases, he doesn’t. But early on Monday, Musk had plenty to say about his upcoming Cybertruck pickup.
One Twitter user asked Musk about the Cybertruck’s ability to cross over streams. He said that he had and “it will even float for a while.” Another person asked Musk if the truck will get a heat pump.
“Yeah, and whole lot more,” Musk said. He added that he’s “dying to make Cybertruck like yesterday!!”
Unfortunately for Musk, that hasn’t happened. In fact, Cybertruck isn’t expected to start hitting the road until next year at the earliest, and with all that’s going on now, there’s no telling whether Cybertruck will be delayed.
Still, Musk has given himself the unenviable task of trying to get people to care about a car that won’t be available until next year while the world battles with a coronavirus threat that has killed tens of thousands of Americans and many more around the world.
Meanwhile, there are very real concerns about what’s happening at Tesla. The company’s share price continues to soar, but the company has been trying to save cash and was forced to slash employee pay and furlough staff because of the coronavirus outbreak. Tesla has also asked its landlords to renegotiate their leases.
Musk, meanwhile, has been using Twitter to answer questions and deal with controversies. Most recently, Tesla was criticized for failing to deliver ventilators to hospitals, despite a promise to do so. Musk laughed off the allegations and said that he has “receipts” that show the company delivered ventilators to hospitals. Maybe that’s why he prefers tweeting about his as-yet-launched truck.
Looking ahead, there’s no telling what will happen with the Cybertruck. If nothing else, we can expect Musk to continue to do everything he can to keep it relevant even as the world deals with much more important things.
